Why I'm So Drawn to Color

There are artists who whisper. I seem to speak in color.

When people first discover my work, one of the first things they notice isn't the botanical subject—it's the intensity of the palette. Electric fuchsia. Burning orange. Acid greens. Turquoise against black. Crimson beside gold. It often surprises people because nature is frequently portrayed in muted greens and delicate earth tones. Yet when I look at plants, I don't see restraint. I see celebration.

For me, color isn't decoration. It's emotion made visible.

As a botanical artist, I've always been fascinated by the incredible architecture of plants—the perfect mathematics inside a leaf, the spirals of a pine cone, the symmetry of petals, the hidden geometry of seeds. But structure alone never felt like enough. I wanted to capture what those forms feel like.

Color became the language that allowed me to express wonder.

Nature Is Far More Colorful Than We Remember

Walk through a botanical garden, rainforest, or even your neighborhood in late summer, and you'll discover colors that almost seem impossible.

Flowers fluoresce.

Leaves glow.

Moss becomes emerald velvet.

Carnivorous plants appear almost extraterrestrial.

Nature has never been subtle.

That realization inspired works like Carnivorous Blooms, where exotic pitcher plants, Venus flytraps, and rare botanical forms become almost surreal through saturated reds, luminous greens, and vibrant pinks. Instead of documenting plants scientifically, I wanted to celebrate their drama and mystery.

Likewise, Eucalyptus Flowers in Fuchsia transforms familiar eucalyptus blossoms into something joyful and unexpected. The fuchsia isn't intended to imitate reality—it expresses the energy I experience when observing nature.

And with Kaleidoscope Flowers, color itself becomes the subject. Floral forms dissolve into rhythmic layers of vibrant hues, blurring the line between botanical illustration and abstract expressionism.

Color Changes a Room

One reason I continue creating vibrant botanical art is because I've seen what it does inside a home.

A single colorful artwork can completely transform an interior.

It becomes a conversation piece.

It brings warmth to minimalist spaces.

It softens modern architecture.

It energizes neutral palettes.

Interior designers often talk about creating a focal point. I like to think of color as creating an emotional focal point.

Whether the room is Mid-Century Modern, Scandinavian, Organic Modern, Contemporary, Japandi, Eclectic, or even a traditional home filled with antiques, bold botanical art introduces life without overwhelming the space.

Plants Already Tell Incredible Stories

I don't invent strange botanical forms.

Nature already has.

Carnivorous plants.

Alien-looking fungi.

Twisting eucalyptus blossoms.

Unfolding ferns.

Seed pods that resemble architecture.

Flowers that look like sea creatures.

By amplifying their colors, I'm simply inviting viewers to look a little longer.

Many people tell me they discover details they hadn't noticed before. That's one of the greatest compliments I can receive.

Joy Matters

The world asks us to consume endless bad news.

Creating colorful botanical art is my small act of optimism.

When I'm painting, I want to feel curious again.

Playful.

Hopeful.

Inspired.

If someone hangs one of my prints in their home and smiles every time they walk past it, then I've succeeded.

Art doesn't always have to be quiet.

Sometimes it can sing.
